For aficionados of the Bartók String Quartets there are surely few recordings, if any, that compare with the classic cycle done by the old Juilliard SQ. But this doesn't mean there are no other good recordings out there of these important, beautiful works. I have always enjoyed this month's recording -- with the Vogler String Quartet -- for example. I think in this Quartet they capture the grit and fire of the second movement quite nicely. And they play the dolce sections with real warmth. Incidentally, the Beethoven performance is also good. |
