Certainly the 20th century brought with it a revival of British compositional prominence, the likes of which hadn't been seen for centuries. (The resurgence really began towards the end of the 19th century). A remarkable number of the English composers turned towards vocal, opera and, especially, choral writing, including Holst, Britten, and this month's featured composer, Vaughan Williams. Though I am generally not a fan of Vaughan Williams's work, I have always had a bit of a soft spot (perhaps inexplicable) for the "Dona nobis pacem." |
