Rachmaninoff made a quite wonderful recording (as a pianist) of this movement of the Three Russian Songs with a Russian folk singer; he later orchestrated the songs. The full score is extremely difficult to obtain, and thus is among my most prized musical possessions.Though rarely performed, the songs are all wonderfully evocative. This one, performed nicely by St. Louis and Leonard Slatkin, tells the somewhat amusing tale of a woman who must remove her make-up before her husband comes home. (The song is told from her standpoint).
