Samuel Barber wrote a slew of really terrific works. Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Dover Beach, and even the perennial favorite Adagio for Strings spring to mind. But his finest work, in my opinion, is his terrific Piano Concerto. Written for and premiered by John Browning, the clip this month is from his first recording of the work, with Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra (1964). Unfortunately this recording is currently unavailable, but he did make a second recording (click the link) with Slatkin. |
