Dmitri Shostakovich

Preludes and Fugues, op. 87

Tatiana Nikolayeva

I always advise students to listen with as open a mind (and ears) as they can. This month's clip is an object-lesson from my own experience in doing just that (not to sound too preachy). I have never been a big Shostakovich fan. I've played a slew of his works, and heard many more. Yet, I have always tried to be open to his (and others') writing. Friends would say "you've got to hear his..." and I'd go listen and come away unimpressed. However, I obtained a Richter recording of some Chopin pieces a few years ago and it came with some Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues; I really liked them. A lot. Enough to plunk down a good bit of cash to get a copy of this month's clip. While I didn't fall in love with every one of them, there are some really good things in here. They certainly are the best Shostakovich pieces I've heard. Enjoy!
