Robert Schumann's first appearance in the CCM affords me the opportunity to forgo choosing one of his more familiar works (I initially thought to put the piano concerto here) in favor of his often over-looked first piano sonata. A charming, but flawed work, each movement still offers enough verve and élan to keep one enchanted. This month's clip, from the Scherzo, shows Schumann's characteristic rhythmic ingenuity in all its skillful glory. I am not a huge fan of this particular performance, but it happens to be the only one I have at the moment in a digital format. |
