Among New York's greatest cultural draws is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world, St. John the Divine (known to New Yorkers as "St. John the Unfinished"). This month's CCM is a recording made at SJD for the purpose of showing off the cathedral's acoustics. Having heard several performances there, I must confess that it is not, for me anyway, a good experience. But, recording there is another matter entirely. I really like this CD, and always have.

The recording has music which spans the centuries and Musica Sacra is well-equipped to handle the material. The choice of material is a feast of important music: where else can one get Spem in alium (arguably Tallis's most important work; it's certainly one of his most famous ones), Schoenberg's Friede auf Erden and Strauss's rarely-done but magnificent Deutshe Motette all in one spot?

Speaking of Schoenberg, the clip this month is of Peace on Earth. For those with dodecaphobia, be not frightened (this work is earlier). For those with Schoenbergitis, worry not - this work will make you at least want to try everything else he did. I really hope you like this clip.
