I only worked with the late Gunther Schuller once, in a concert performance of his landmark 1959 orchestral work, Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee. As is often the case in my life, though I listen to a lot of music (see the CCM archives and the recordings page for a rough guide to just the classical scope, which, of course, doesn't come close to listing everything), I find that there just are not enough hours in the day, days in the week, or weeks in the year to listen to everything I'd like. Thus, though that concert with Schuller took place now several decades ago, it is only recently that I am exploring Schuller's works in more depth. And the looming question for me is "what the heck took so long?!" I really love this recording, which includes not only this absolutely awesome work from 1986, but also his Fantasy-Suite (for guitar) from 1994, and the Duologue (for violin and piano) from 1981. As an extra treat, there is an interview with Schuller (alas, all-too brief) to round out the disc. |
