An accomplished organist and pianist (he might have given the English premiere of Rhapsody in Blue), Fela Sowande is probably the best-known classical composer to hail from Nigeria. Though the surface of his orchestral works clearly show his training in European orchestral writing tradition, the substance of them is well-rooted in the Nigerian folk music near to his heart. As Dominique-René de Lerma noted, "the rhythms, scales, and melodies were idealizations of Nigerian sources. Sowande thus joined the other nationalists, following the same process traveled by William Grant Still." Listen this month to the beautiful fabric of the "Nostalgia" movement from his 1930 African Suite. This interesting disc also includes pieces by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and the aforementioned William Grant Still. |
