Carl Orff
Carmina Burana
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone Gundula Janowitz, soprano Gerhard Stolze, tenor Eugen Jochum, conductor Chor und Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin Schöneberger Sängerknaben
Carl Orff isn't quite a one-hit wonder of classical music (his Gassenhauer nach Hans Neusiedler is pretty well-known), but for all practical purposes he might as well be. His cantata, Carmina Burana is one of the best-known works in the canon, with the opening chorus being particularly well-known. Its use in movies–and, even more so, its obvious influence on movie composition (if you have a scene with a cult, you'll hear it or something derivative of it)–is ubiquitous. It is also the subject of this truly great "Misheard Lyrics" video:
But there is much more to the work than just the opening (which, in my opinion, is not even the best part of the work). This month we visit the beautiful baritone solo from the eighteenth movement (In my heart), sung here by a voice well familiar to regular listeners of the CCM: the incomparable Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
