This relatively recent recording of two symphonies, numbers 1 and 3, by the great Louise Farrenc is a real treat, and the works are downright revelatory. While some have commented about the resemblance to Beethoven in her writing, I feel that comparison is superficial at best. Farrenc has her own voice, well-developed, elegant, sophisticated, brooding, driven, daring, and beautiful. If you don't know her works (some of the piano pieces are really great and probably a bit better known), these symphonies are an excellent place to start. This month's clip is from the very opening of the terrific Symphony #3, op. 36. |
