Jeffrey Mumford is a prominent figure in modern music-making. He's been awarded by the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations and received commissions from the Library of Congress, the National Symphony Orchestra, Meet the Composer, and the Naumberg foundation, among others. Much of his music draws upon his background in visual arts, and his identification with the movement of clouds. This recording, from 1993, was the first CD recording devoted exclusively to Mumford's works, and provides a dazzling overview of his output. It was hard to choose a single clip this month, but I've gone with an excerpt from his work for two flutes, filaments, with its charm, elegance, and moments of virtuosic intensity. |
