Richard Strauss

Tod und Verklärung, op. 24

The MET Orchestra
James Levine, conductor

As one gets older, time has a funny way of accelerating. I was listening to this lovely recording and it occurred to me that it had been three or four years since Strauss was last a CCM choice. I was taken aback that, actually, it had been close to a decade! This perception of time, and the rapid approach of the final, sweet release, perhaps could not have happened with a more apropos piece than Struass's transcendental Tod und Verklärung. On his own deathbed, Strauss remarked that dying was, actually, just how he had depicted it in this work. Let's hope so?
