Last month's CCM was the first in a series dedicated to EMI's terrific "ICON" series. Up this month: the incomparable Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. The collection, appropriately called "Perfect Prima Donna" encompasses an excellent cross-section of the diva's output, from Bach cantatas to operatic arias to concert arias and lieder. While not everything is to my particular liking (see my passing comment, here), there is barely a passage in the whole collection which is not a technical masterpiece and a beauty to behold. And, of course, most of her interpretations are unimpeachable, too. Listen to this month's clip, an aria in which Konstanze defiantly proclaims that no torture will make her unfaithful to her beloved. (Long-time subscribers will undoubtedly remember that The Abduction from the Seraglio was a clip some time ago). |
