Not every work has to be a grand artistic statement and, thankfully, there is room in this world for light fare in addition to all the High Art. This lovely set of British music by EMI brings a nice collection of both types of pieces. Each of the five discs in the collection addresses a different genre, with mixed results. The first is decidedly light, with mostly delightful works. The second, a collection of piano works, has some fun pieces (note the inclusion of Lambert), but the jazz/rags wear a little thin in a single sitting—a little of that goes a long way. The third (Miniatures) and fourth (Anthems) discs are, on the whole, instantly forgettable, as is the first two-thirds of the fifth disc (String Music), though this disc includes two of the biggest names in the collection (Elgar and Vaughan Williams); the fifth disc is saved by the inclusion of William Walton's vibrant Sonata for Strings. For this month's clip, we visit one of the most famous and influential movies in British cinematic history, "The Dam Busters." (This is what Pink keeps watching in "The Wall".) Based on a true story, the opening-credit march, by Eric Coates, is particularly well known.
