Benjamin Britten

Diversions for Piano (left hand) and Orchestra, op. 21

Leon Fleisher, piano
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Seiji Ozawa, conductor

It's been a long time since we visited Britten on these pages, and even longer since the wonderful Leon Fleisher made an appearance, so this month we'll have both.

This month's clip comes from the recent Fleisher Complete Album collection. The box set is beautifully done, with good recording quality throughout and, of course, classic performances. One minor drawback is that, in the understandable zeal to faithfully reproduce the exact original look of each LP on the CDs, the designers seemed to have forgotten that LPs are 12 inches wide, while CDs, well, aren't! A complimentary pair of magnifying glasses to read the liner notes on the back of each disc would have been helpful.

Anyway, though Fleischer rarely goes out on a limb with his repertoire choices (even now, when he can once again use both hands), what he does perform is universally fantastic. Much of his left-hand repertoire was originally written for Paul Wittgenstein, including this month's clip, Britten's lovely Diversions. Here is the Badinerie (trifle) variation to bring some light amusement your way.
