It's a shame that, in the USA, Honegger's fame seems to rest almost exclusively on a single work: his first Symphonic Movement, the incandescent Pacific 231. Many of his works are brilliant; all of them are well-crafted. This month, I offer Honneger's second Symphonic Movement, Rugby. A short, wild ride, one hears overtones of Copland in the end of this fun piece. Along with much of his output, it deserves more widespread performance. |
