It is hard to find good recordings of Brahms' piano music. So often the texture is so thick that it is a rare pianist indeed who can pull off his works without them sounding either bombastic or just plain clunky. This month's clip is from one of the more famous Brahms interpreters, the late Julius Katchen. I enjoy a lot of his work, but must say that even he is not my ideal Brahms interpreter; I've not actually found any performer who can convincingly do a wide swath of his pieces, though there are some who do some things really well (Ax doing the Handel Variations, for example).
But there are, for sure, some really lovely recordings in this famous collection. This month's clip (an entire work) is a good example.
