Gershwin's grand operatic masterpiece, Porgy and Bess, like most stage works, underwent significant alterations from the time it was first composed to the time of its debut. In this case, there were literally thousands of alterations. Some involved the tiniest changes of detail; others involved massive alterations, mostly of the "cutting" variety, as the original score was well over 3 hours long. Alas, some pieces which weren't cut in the original run, somehow were subsequently left off of productions anyway. Such is the case with this cheery, fun number, finally restored in this well-known recording by John Mauceri, in the original 1935 production. |
