Like last month's CCM, this month's clip is of a staple in the orchestral literature. One of Rimsky-Korsakov's most beloved works, his Scheherazade is still the best-known musical treatment of the subject matter, despite numerous other settings, most notably by Ravel (in two different forms). The excerpt here, from the lilting third movement, is a good example of Rimsky's renowned skills as an orchestrator, showing grace, balance, and not a little imagination. |
