Not all CCMs are of obscure works. This month we visit a stirring performance of one of Elgar's best-known and most beloved works, and the one which made him internationally famous, the Variations on an Original Theme, better known, of course, as the Enigma Variations. And as occasionally happens, its popularity is matched by its quality -- it might very well be his best work. The clip is of the hunter's variation, and is probably the most famous one of the collection. Jaeger, the publishing office manager at Novello, has the distinction of not only having this beautiful variation named in his honor (Elgar said that he "omitted your outside manners and have only seen the good, loveable honest SOUL in the middle of you"), but he is also the one who wrote the word "enigma" over the theme on the manuscript. |
