Josquin Desprez

Missa Pange Lingua

The Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge
George Guest

Of the approximately 20 masses attributed to Josquin, including a couple of L'homme Armé settings, perhaps none is as important as his Missa Pange Lingua, based on the Corpus Christi version of Fortunatus's Easter hymn. Unlike so many other mass settings based on earlier tunes, whether they be of the cantus firmus, parody, or paraphrase variety, the plainchant melody in this mass does not camp out in the tenor for the duration, but rather it infuses each voice, often woven into the counterpoint like a musical tapestry. Small wonder that Josquin was such a monumentally influential figure on so many 16th-century composers.
