Alberto Ginastera is easily the best-known Argentinian classical composer. Though much of his music sounds alike to me (how many last-movement hemiolas with a thousand percussion instruments can one listen to?!), he does have a couple of stand-out works. Though his best work -- at least of the ones I know -- is probably his first piano concerto, I have always been partial to his Harp Concerto. (Yes, they both have the aforementioned hemiolas!). This month's excerpt features the very opening of the concerto. |
