This is Dohnányi's most famous work, though I don't know how well-known it remains. I did not personally know it until fairly recently, but I was charmed by it from the start. The opening barely hints at the tune in question (though, if followed closely, you can make out a snip here and there), and the piano's entry is as simple as it can be. Both things conspire to make one think the piece is going to be something it isn't.This month's clip is from the brilliant finale. If you still can't make out the tune -- wait for it -- the piano will once again intone it in the bluntest terms, before a rapid and shimmering close. And, as a bonus, the pianist is Dohnányi himself on this recording.
