This month we look at yet another underrated/forgotten composer. As we have covered contemporaries such as Zemlinsky here, Schreker's inclusion should not come as a surprise. Chromatic and dramatic to the core, he is sometimes looked upon not on his own terms but as a second-rate Schoenberg or other such nonsense. Though I am not proposing that Schreker is unfairly being left out of the Pantheon of Great Composers, some of his works -- including this month's clip -- are quite lovely, and certainly deserving of a wider audience. Have a listen and see if you agree. |
