This month's CCM is from one of my favorite recordings of my favorite Ravel opera (hey, he only has two, and the other one already made it to the list!). The charming story of the child and the sorceries (or spells) is that of a temper-tantrum gone very wrong. The child of the title, having thrown a fit and destroyed the contents of his room, is amazed to find that the objects come alive to torment him as they were tormented by him (a little like the apple trees in The Wizard of Oz). In this month's excerpt, we hear one of my favorite parts -- the old man and the chorus of numbers. As the child himself exclaims: "Mon Dieu! C'est l'Arithmétique!" (Nothing like being attacked by your math book!) As you'll hear, the numbers are, hysterically, a little bit "off" in this tour de force. |
