The choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, is one of the best college choirs in Europe, and their success (and international acclaim) is due in no small part to the assured leadership of George Guest. (The choir consists of young trebles and then altos, tenors, and basses from the undergrads). Though they have an impressive number of recordings, this particular recording has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. The Allegri is ethereal and the Lassus is magnificent. But the Palestrina (which includes here both the motet and the missa) is divine. |
