The Jubal Trio has been on the forefront of the new music scene for the past 35 years. Largely due to their existence, the combination of voice, flute and harp is no longer viewed as a novelty, but rather as a vital combination, full of intriguing timbral possibilities. This CD contains works written for the group by five composers: Donald Freund, Harvey Sollberger, Tania León, Eric Stokes and the elder statesman of the collection, George Crumb. The latter, of course, needs little in the way of introduction; he is one of the most renowned composers of our time. This month's clip, a charming movement from his Federico's Little Songs for Children, displays Crumb's special ability to evoke unusual sounds from even the most usual of instruments without sounding at all gimmicky.
