There are a number of terrific works from Copland's period of flirtation with Jazz. Supreme among them, in my opinion, is his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, a vibrant and special work in his output. This month we hear Copland himself performing with those folks so closely associated with him, namely Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic. The beginning of the last movement (the work is performed straight through, without breaks between movements) is heard in this month's clip.
