Henry Purcell

The Secular Songs of Henry Purcell (Volume III)

King's Consort
Barbara Bonney, Susan Gritton
James Bowman, Rogers Covey-Crump
Charles Daniels, Michael George

Ever since I was a kid and I first heard King Arthur, I've had a real soft spot in my heart for Purcell. He is, arguably, the greatest English composer of all time; certainly no one really gave him a good run for his money until at least the 19th century. At any rate, this month's clip is not from King Arthur. It is, rather, a secular song in the more ribald vein -- another thing Purcell is acclaimed (?) for! Have a listen as Charles Daniels tells just what has happened to 'love' lately.

The recording is from a lovely series put out by Hyperion. As a great bonus, the incomparable Barbara Bonney is one of the several singers.
