Rautavaara was, arguably, the most influential Finnish composer after Sibelius until one gets to Lindberg, Sallinen, Saariaho, and Rautavaara's student, Salonen. This month's clip comes from a very good, two-disc collection spanning his compositional output from the early neo-Romantic works of the late 1960s to the more eclectic output of his later works. Buyer beware: there are complete works on the recording, but also several works presented in excerpt form only. The earliest work on the recording is 1968's Anadyomene (The Adoration of Aphrodite), with Leif Segerstam conducting the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a gorgeous work, reminiscent at moments of Berg and Debussy, and yet presenting a new soundscape which is expressive and captivating. |
