It was a difficult decision this month to choose which work I wanted to feature from this excellent recording. Of the four composers represented, only Clara Schumann has previously made a CCM appearance. And while I am a fan of the music of both Lili Boulanger and Germaine Tailleferre (both of whom are likely future CCMers), this month I went with an enchanting Ouverture from Fanny Mendelssohn. Given its U.S. premiere by Jo Ann Falletta and The Women's Philharmonic more than a century after it was composed, one hopes that it will enter into the concert halls as a more permanent addition to the repertoire. It is a lovely work, brimming with good tunes, subtle harmonic shading, and clean, vibrant orchestration. |
