This month's clip brings perhaps Amy Beach's best-known work, her Symphony in E minor, the so-called "Gaelic" Symphony. Though there are certain aspects of the work which are borderline cliché 19th-century devices (how many crescendoing dominant pedal-points can one hear?), it is, on balance, a really engaging piece. The second movement, sampled here, is a lovely romp which, despite the Irish context, can't help but smack of real Americana. I encourage you to enjoy the lilt, and to go listen to the whole boisterous, fun work. |
