This lovely collection features works by Weill and perhaps his best-known writing partner, Bertold Brecht. There are complete recordings of several works, including The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, The Seven Deadly Sins, and, of course, The Threepenny Opera. The performers include such dignitaries as Otto Klemperer, Frank Sinatra, and Weill-specialist Lotte Lenya. But as a special treat, I offer this month Brecht himself singing that most famous tune, Mack the Knife's ballad. I find the performance charming, if not downright comical in the exaggeration of the rolled R's. |
