Ivan Moravec was, like Myra Hess and György Cziffra, one of the Great Pianists of the 20th Century. Like Cziffra, Moravec was particularly well-known for his Chopin performances, but he also had a beautiful command of an impressive range and variety of repertoire. In this month's clip we hear him share the music of his compatriot, the father of Czech music himself, Bedřich Smetana. Though undoubtedly best known for The Bartered Bride and the nationalist classic, Má vlast, Smetana's piano music is worth getting to know. In addition to two of Semtana's stand-alone polkas—"Erinnerung an Pilsen" and the "Poetic Polka"—this collection includes the first movement of his first collection of Czech Dances (also a polka; all four of the first collection's movements are polkas, and the dance is, of course, Czech in origin), and three movements from the second collection. This month's clip is from the Hulán (The Lancer) movement from the second collection. |
