Last month the featured composer was Barrière, but the CCM came with a healthy dose of Saariaho. This month we visit another Finnish composer, the renowned Jean Sibelius making his CCM debut. Sibelius is one of those composers who is heavily hit-or-miss for me. If I'm in the mood, I enjoy his Violin Concerto, even if it does get slightly melodramatic at moments. On the other hand, I'll take that any day over his most famous orchestral work, the ubiquitous Finlandia. While this month's disc includes that workhorse, I've chosen the delightful Karelia Suite for this month's clip. The excerpted movement is sweet, charming, and, unlike many of Sibelius's pieces, finishes before it becomes old, boring, or just downright annoying. |
