I flatter myself to think that all the CCMs are special, but this month's is perhaps extra special, as it marks an auspicious occasion: the 200th Classical Clip of the Month! I can think of no better way to celebrate than to revisit that great musical mind, Johann Sebastian Bach. This month's clip combines several of my favorite things. First, we have Murray Perahia performing repertoire he is well-suited for. Second, we have the glorious French Suites of Bach. And while I love all of them, the G Major suite is my favorite. I have still-strong memories of being transfixed as one of my principal teachers, the great Robert Cuckson, played the Allemande in theory class when I was an undergraduate. The beauty of the piece, the grace of his playing, and his typically elegant explication combined to make an indelible impression. This wasn't, in particular, a "special lecture," or some such thing; thus, it is a good example for us professors to underline that we never really know which choice of repertoire we use for demonstrations might be life-changing (though, use examples of that caliber and your batting average will surely end up high).
Incidentally, Carl Schachter discussed the Gavotte from the same suite in another class I took.
