Furtwängler's recording of the Ring Cycle is not the only great or famous one, of course. This month we visit Solti's equally-renowned recording, which includes the inimitable Kirsten Flagstad in its Rheingold cast, and such luminaries as James King, Birgit Nilsson, Christa Ludwig, Joan Sutherland, Lucia Popp, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the other opera's casts. The performances are clear, crisp, and balanced, and the interpretations are nuanced. I've used the same passage as I did on the Furtwängler clip for this month's CCM as a point of comparison.
