Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Complete Keyboard Works from Ages 5 to 9

Lera Auerbach

Whether Mozart was the greatest musical child prodigy in history is a point up for (a not-very-interesting) debate, but he certainly is the most famous one. That his earliest works were taken down in dictation by his father and his extraordinarily talented older sister (Maria Anna, affectionately nicknamed "Nannerl") as he was unable to write well, yet, is testament to his astonishing, burgeoning talent. Even his earliest works, though far from masterpieces, show a precocious gift for balance, elegance, and melodic interest, all of which, of course, will become hallmarks of his mature works. In the few years of very early writing represented on this disc by Lera Auerbach (who, now in her 40s, was herself a prodigy) we witness works of charm, increasing sophistication, and several with a streak of brio. Indeed, the work for this month's clip, in the words of Michael White, who wrote the program notes for the disc, "could be a primitive version of a 'rage aria' from the great opera seria 'Idomeneo.'"

(To note: in a mild bit of confusion, the track numbering gets off by one in the listing in the booklet).
