Coming on the heels of last month's classic, Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, this month I give you a work with a similar, but not identical, soundscape. George Antheil, the self-proclaimed "bad boy of music," is best remembered these days for his iconoclastic masterpiece, the Ballet Mécanique. Even in this recording of the simplified and pared-down 1953 revised version, one still marvels at the beauty and ingenuity of the work. And this very nice recording is even on Naxos, so you won't break the bank getting yourself a copy! |
