I've recently been enjoying the works of Lei Liang, a composer new to me. His chamber works, in particular, I have found generally striking, and they display both great technical command and a unique musical perspective. To be honest, I usually am not enamored with solo harpsichord music even in the best of times. How refreshing to hear Liang's intriguing Some Empty Thoughts of a Person from Edo, then. In this month's clip, I give you just the first minute of the nearly-ten-minute work. The piece develops from this simple, but provocative, opening into a veritable frenzy, until finally dissipating its energy in a most intriguing journey. |
