Though oft-maligned, Sir Arthur Sullivan's operetta work with Gilbert stands perhaps without peer in the genre in its charm, innuendo, and sheer boisterousness. Among his most beloved works is this heart-rending tale of the love of Phoebe Meryll for Colonel Fairfax (who is locked in the Tower, awaiting his execution). How it all plays out is both fun and inspired. The famous D'Oyly Carte Company does what they do best in this delightful performance. |
