The musical material of Berio's Requies unfolds in an appropriately leisurely pace, a single pitch being rearticulated nearly incessantly as a melody emerges. Or, as Berio himself put it, "A chamber orchestra...'describes' a melody, but only in the sense that a shadow describes an object or an echo describes a sound." This month's excerpt, from the world-premiere recording (Berio himself conducing) is from the very opening of the elegant 14-minute work. As a bonus, the disc also contains two other premiere recordings, Voci, based on Sicilian folk music, and Corale, based on one of Berio's famous Sequenzas (1977's Sequenza VIII for violin). |
