I've known Haim Avitsur and David Sapadin, two very busy New York musicians, for over 20 years. Haim, the son of well-known Israeli composer Eitan Avitsur, has made a name for himself not only as a great trombonist, but also as a keen advocate of contemporary music; he has premiered over 80 works, many written especially for him. On this recording, Haim teams up with several friends to record works for trombone by his father. Among them are an appealing set of duets for clarinet and trombone, in which the elder Avitsur explores both the obvious differences between the instruments, and also the not-so-obvious possible similarities. This month's clip is from the last of the duets, a work initially calm which becomes significantly more animated in the second half. Haim and David clearly take pleasure in luxuriating in the delicate soundscape which Eitan evokes. |
