For over a quarter of a century, Harold Rosenbaum's New York Virtuoso Singers have been one of the preeminent vocal ensembles in the world. In addition to their excellent work on repertoire staples, the group has consistently and excellently promoted modern music. On this recording, there are representative works by Henze, Dallapiccola, W. Schuman, D. Lang, M. Dellaira, and Perle.George Perle, like Babbitt, is one of those rare breeds who is perhaps equally well-known for his theoretical musings—in his case, on Berg's operas—as he is for his compositional output. Perle's compositions are both serious and accessible; he is not esoteric in the least. And there are moments of real beauty, too, as this month's CCM clearly highlights.
