While well-known for his advancement of aleatory music, Lutosławski had much more to offer than that. As Salonen points out in his comments on this disc, the "aleatoric counterpoint" was "only a textural solution." In short, it was a means to an end. For me, much more interesting is, first, Lutosławski's manipulation of a purposefully limited, but complex, harmonic field, and second, his extraordinary orchestration skills which can compete on equal footing with any of the greats one cares to mention. This disc brings together three terrific works of his, including the premiere recording of his last major work, the Fourth Symphony, from 1992, which is sampled as this month's clip. |
