Though Revueltas is one of the best-known Mexican composers of classical music (not counting Nancarrow), his works are, alas, not as well-known as they should be. Drawing from a wide swath of influences, his works can be bombastic, mellow, vivacious, silly, stirring -- sometimes all of those within the space of a few bars! The sounds of Mariachi flow effortlessly (and sometimes not-so-effortlessly) into rich orchestral textures. And then sometimes, like this month's clip, you simply get something both haunting and beautiful.(Incidentally, as a sign of his highly sensitive ears, note that there are no voices in this piece, only the evocation of them).
