Some artists are good at many things (e.g., Stravinsky), a select few are good at all things (e.g., Mozart), but most are specialists of sorts. Dickinson's short poems, Dickens' novels, etc. Wagner, of course, was a great operatic genius. His few non-operatic works for orchestra are very much worth listening to (perhaps a future CCM?). But the thing one remembers about his piano music is just how forgettable it is. There are a couple of real moments of interest, but they get lost in a general sea of blah. Alas. Here is an excerpt from one of his better piano works. |
